Understanding raw and PSA 10 reference prices

What the raw market reference and the PSA 10 estimate cover, why missing prices are not zero, and how quantities add up in a collection value.

By MasterThis Published

MasterThis shows two kinds of reference price: a raw market reference for an ungraded copy and, where one exists, a PSA 10 estimate for a copy graded PSA 10. This guide explains what each covers and how totals use them.

One printing, one grade

Every price belongs to one exact printing. A Reverse Holo has its own price, separate from the Normal printing of the same card. Open a card and its Market references area shows the raw reference (TCGplayer market, for that printing) and the PSA 10 estimate (from PriceCharting) as separate lines, each with its source and date.

For example, the Exeggcute 001/191 Normal in SV08: Surging Sparks has both a raw reference and a PSA 10 estimate, while the Exeggcute 001/191 Reverse Holo has a raw reference but no PSA 10 estimate, so its PSA 10 line reads Unavailable.

What a reference is not

  • A reference is not an offer to buy or sell, and it is not the price of any one sale.
  • A PSA 10 estimate applies only to a PSA 10 copy. A PSA 9 copy never gets the PSA 10 value; other grades need their own estimate, and on your copies your own estimate is what counts.
  • A missing price is unknown, not zero.

Quantities and totals (worked example)

Suppose a printing's raw reference is $2.50, you own 3 raw copies and one copy graded PSA 10, and its PSA 10 estimate is $40.00. These are made-up numbers for the arithmetic.

A collection value worked example
CopiesReferenceCounts toward the value
3 raw$2.50 each$7.50
1 PSA 10$40.00 estimate$40.00
1 PSA 9No supported estimateYour own estimate, or counted as unpriced

Collection value on a checklist adds up the copies you own: raw copies at the raw reference once per copy, PSA 10 copies at the PSA 10 estimate, and other graded copies at the estimate you entered on that copy. Copies with no value are counted as unpriced, so a partial total never reads as complete.

Cost to finish is different: it adds the raw reference of each printing you have not marked as owned, once per printing, and counts printings without a price as unpriced.

Your own estimates are private. On a shared or public page, values use public references only; your own estimates are never shown or counted there.

Price history

A card's Price history shows the daily references MasterThis recorded: recorded reference prices, not individual sales. A day with no record is a gap in the chart, not a day without change, and a short history says little about where a price is going.

Limits

References come from public market data and can be stale, wrong or missing; check the live listing before buying or selling. Nothing here is financial advice or a forecast.
